Like a Prayer draws inspiration from British fetish archives, particularly the celebrated Atomage magazine, as a way of thinking through the relationship between spirituality, desire, materiality and image-making. I return to this material not to decode or historicise it but because it offers a complex visual and affective language that, despite the dominance of an overtly objectifying gaze, remains generative and grounded in care, sensuality, surface, constraint and intensity.

The images involve my own body as well as the bodies of others who are close to me and function as staged, ritualistic encounters in which appearances are mediated through clothing, gesture and apparatus. Rubber, leather, cord and light shape the conditions of the image, concentrating attention and producing a charged, ambiguous atmosphere that hovers between the erotic and something less easily defined.

Underlying the work is a sense that spiritual, creative and erotic drives are closely aligned, if not indistinguishable, each concerned with projection, transformation and a movement beyond the atomized self.

The work is guided as much by intuition as by intention. I tend to proceed through a kind of negative process, having a clear sense of what the work resists, even when its final form remains open. This allows for a degree of indeterminacy to persist within the images. The aim is not resolution but to sustain a wild space in which meaning remains active, contingent and partially withheld.
